Citizenship By Descent
You may be eligible to apply to become an Australian citizen by descent if:
you were born outside Australia, and
one of your parents was an Australian citizen at the time of your birth.

If your Australian citizen parent was a citizen by descent then that parent must have spent at least two years in Australia.

If you were born outside Australia or New Guinea before 26 January 1949 you may be eligible if:

at least one or your parents became an Australian citizen on 26 January 1949; and
that parent was born in Australia or New Guinea, or was naturalised in Australia before your birth.

All applicants aged 18 years and over must be of good character.

Children
Applications for children under 16 years of age must be made by a parent or legal guardian.

VISA APPLICATION
PROCESS


Step 1
Select a visa subclass which is appropriate for the purpose of your travel to Australia and download the relevant visa application form.

Please note: You can also obtain a visa application form at the Australian Visa Application Centre (AVAC).

Step 2
Your visa application may require supporting documentation For a list of supporting documentation required for your visa; see the checklists provided under “Visa Types”. Gather together required supporting documentation for your application.

To avoid delays all supporting documentation should be submitted at the time of application

Step 3
Make an appointment with the AVAC to lodge your application and submit your biometrics

Step 4
Lodge your visa application and submit your biometric data at an AVAC. The Australian Visa Office may contact you to request additional information.
